How to Approach Your Free Quran: A Guide for Non-Muslims
Have you received your Free Quran? Here’s how to read it right and show proper respect.
This book means everything to billions of people worldwide. The Quran is not just any book on the shelf, it’s sacred and the actual words of God revealed to change every aspect of our lives.
If you are a non-Muslim approaching this sacred text for any purpose be it research or curiosity, doing so with respect is important. Only by approaching the Quran with respect can you truly benefit from it and have a meaningful experience.
Approach Your Free Quran with an Open Mind
Islam cares a lot about why you do things. It places a lot of emphasis on the right intentions and sincerity, as it’s the door to any deed. Before you open your free Quran, stop and ask yourself: Why exactly am I reading? Is it to learn, genuinely understand, and find common ground? Or am I just looking for stuff to argue about at work?
If you were to truly approach the Quran with an open heart rather than preconceived biases – allowing the Quran to speak for itself, you will be able to truly appreciate the text and gain unimaginable insights that you never could have imagined. Your attitude changes everything about this experience, trust me.
Understand the Structure of the Free Quran
Don’t expect this to be like the Bible or a regular story. The Quran is unique in its structure and isn’t arranged from beginning to end. The Quran was revealed over a period of 23 years based on events and circumstances but is currently organized from the longest chapter to the shortest.
Throughout the Quran, you will see familiar names of Prophets like Adam, Moses, Abraham, Jesus, etc., emphasizing lessons rather than historical dates and timelines. The verses revealed in Makkah talked about themes like faith, patience, accountability, afterlife, and belief, while the later verses in Madinah were more focused on social laws and community.
For some it is easier starting from the very beginning and reading the whole of the Quran consistently while for others it may be helpful starting with shorter chapters of the Quran all the way in the end. You might enjoy Surah Al-Ikhlas (“Sincerity”) or Surah Ar-Rahman (“The Most Merciful”) since they speak about sincerity, and God’s love and mercy.
Embrace Every Verse of Your Free Quran
Read every verse like it matters! Read it with the intent to understand and implement. Your goal should not be simply to finish the text, but to connect with its message. After reading a passage, stop and think about its meaning and reflect on how the message would connect with your life. By focusing on understanding and internalizing the teachings and values, you engage with the text at a deeper level than simply analyzing its words.
